Song of the day – May 25

The Knux
You wouldn’t have to look very hard on this blog to figure out I usually prefer my hip-hop on the plain side – meaning as devoid as possible of innovative genre-bendings. Of all unholy alliances (country-rap/hick-hop anyone?), the hybrid I’ve traditionally been most suspicious of – and let’s be honest – disquieted by, is that of hip-hop and rock and roll. (Yes, the new Lil’ Wayne, I am looking at you.) There just seemed to be something in the amalgam of heavy guitar riffs and rap beats I wasn’t “acquiring”.
But then came along The Knux (originally from New Orleans but now based in L.A., courtesy of Hurricane Katrina), who just took me by surprise and forced me to admit, through the sheer geniousness and glory of their sound, that I didn’t know my asparagus from my elbow. So there. I said it. They sound amazing. Even though they wear cute little ironic mustaches, neck scarves, skinny black jeans and everything. Isn’t life grand?
However, it appears these cool cats are just too sexy for their Youtube: every single (watchable quality) video I could find of today’s Song of the day, Bang! Bang! was “Embedding disabled by request.” Come on guys; this is the Internet. The more views the merrier. But you shouldn’t let that stop you. The sublimely shot and very stylish video (apparently inspired by the 1983 classic movie The Outsiders), will make you a believer in all sorts of mish-mashes. That is, if you weren’t already.
